Data

Gut Reaction facilitates rapid research in IBD by linking lifestyle, research and genomic data from more than 34,600 consented IBD patients in the NIHR BioResource with real-world data from participating NHS Hospitals, the UK IBD Registry and other national datasets

The Gut Reaction partnership, led by Cambridge University Hospitals, unites rich UK-wide data sources and expertise, forming a unique resource for driving innovation in IBD

Lifestyle, research and genomic data from more than 34,600 consented IBD patients in the NIHR BioResource can be linked with real-world health record data from participating NHS Hospitals, the UK IBD Registry and other national datasets in our state-of-the-art Trusted Research Environments to facilitate innovative research.

This allows approved researchers controlled access to previously unavailable datasets, promoting clinical innovation. Fourteen NHS trusts have provided data for Gut Reaction so far.

In addition, patients may be recalled for clinical trials and other experimental medicine studies through the NIHR BioResource, with targeted recruitment based on genetic and phenotypic traits identified across multiple datasets from different sources.

Available Data

Gut Reaction unites data from consented patients in the NIHR IBD BioResource, the UK IBD Registry, participating NHS trusts, NHS Digital (Hospital Episode Statistics) and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. Researchers can apply to access datasets including demographics, health and lifestyle information, genetics, prescribing, diagnostics and genetics.

You can find specific, up-to-date and detailed information about our available datasets here or by browsing the HDR UK Innovation Gateway.

The HDR UK Innovation Gateway makes health data available to researchers and innovators in a secure and accountable way, promoting better disease understanding, and innovation in prevention, treatment and cure. The Gateway search engine allows potential data users to search, discover and request access to hundreds of datasets, tools and resources, including the Gut Reaction data.

Data Access

Gut Reaction employs rigorous data governance procedures to ensure that approved data requests are safe, appropriate and have the potential to benefit patients and the wider NHS.  Researchers can apply to access datasets relevant to their research through a simple application, depending on the specific nature of their request.

Privacy and Safety

Health data research is an evolving field with great potential for patient benefit, but progress is only possible by maintaining public trust and confidence with consistently high levels of data security, privacy and oversight.  You can read more about how Gut Reaction works with our partners to ensure that all data in Gut Reaction remains secure and private here.
