Industry requests

Industry-funded research is integral to driving innovation in IBD, and we welcome applications from commercial organisations

The Application Process

Gut Reaction has been designed with the needs of industry in mind, to streamline the data access process and provide a range of tools and expertise to support research and innovation that improves the lives of those living with IBD.

All applications must demonstrate a reasonable expectation of benefit to patient health and provide a description of their project in ‘plain English’ (also known as a lay summary) to support review by patient representatives.

All commercial applications are considered by a national Steering Committee, which includes a patient representative and sits on a quarterly basis. The application pathway is outlined in the diagram below:

Make an application

Investigators can apply to access their required datasets by submitting a data access request to the NIHR BioResource outlining their proposed study.  Details of upcoming meetings can be found on the NIHR BioResource website.

Pricing

Costs for accessing data depend on the size of dataset and granularity of data, but generally range from £8,000 for a pilot study to £50,000 for a large study. Further costs will apply where additional curation is required to source, standardise or integrate data to meet study requirements, to cover cloud computing costs and any specific configuration requirements or for linkage of additional datasets. We are happy to meet informally with industry to discuss potential costs prior to receipt of a Data Access Application.

Revenues generated by the Hub will be reinvested to support Hub services, IBD research, and the participating not-for-profit organisations, which include the NHS organisations who have contributed data that informed the innovation. Intellectual Property (IP) associated with data insights will be owned by the organisation that develops it.
