Academic requests

Gut Reaction has been designed with the needs of academic researchers in mind, to streamline the data access process and provide a range of tools and expertise to support research

Applying for data access

Applications from academic or clinical researchers may follow one of two straightforward pathways depending on the nature of the request.  Complete requests that require only de-identified data proceed via our data access committee, whereas requests that are more complex require review by the steering committee.

This process is outlined in the diagram below.

Make an application

Investigators can apply to access the data collated through the Gut Reaction Hub by submitting a data access request to the NIHR BioResource. Applications should clearly outline the data sets requested, the purpose of the proposed study and appropriate funding support.

All applications must demonstrate a reasonable expectation of benefit to patient health and provide a description of their project in ‘plain English’ (also known as a lay summary) to support review by patient representatives.

Acknowledging Gut Reaction in publications

We require all publications to include the following wording in the acknowledgements section:

We thank NIHR BioResource volunteers for their participation, and gratefully acknowledge NIHR BioResource centres, NHS Trusts and staff for their contribution. We thank the National Institute for Health and Care Research and NHS Blood and Transplant, and Health Data Research UK as part of the Digital Innovation Hub Programme. The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NHS, the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.”
